4.9 People’s languages – a practical example

We read about the following out of the book ‘The beauty of a spiritual language’ by Jack Hayford:
Evelyn Thompson was a missionary in the southern part of the Filipines, on the Island Mindanao. There are  many remote places on this island where outsiders don’t come. She and her husband were travelling to visit a new village. There was a woman coming from that area who had completely lost her mind. The people in the village didn’t know what to do with her and had brought her to a place near the ocean. There they had built a house on poles in the sand. The poles may have been about four metres high. The house was made out of bamboo and it looked more like a cage then a place for a person to live in. Evelyn and her husband were brought to the house with a few other people to pray for this woman. The woman was very firmly tied to the ground and could not get loose.
Evelyn tells us: “As soon as we entered the room we realized what was happening, because the Holy Spirit showed us the demonic character of the woman’s problem. There was a small baby lying on a mat in the corner of the room. It was her baby, a beautiful baby, but she couldn’t take care of it. Someone else took care of the baby.
As we entered and almost immediately started praying for her, the woman began to furiously raise her voice. We prayed like one would do in an environment like this, with power in the language of the Holy Spirit.
It looked like nothing happened.
In the end I said to the people: “Could the people that don’t believe or don’t have the faith for this woman to be delivered from the chains that bind her soul please leave the room?” Except for three persons they all left the room. My husband, another man and I stayed.
Then we started praying again. At first when I laid hands on her she calmed down but nothing happened. My soul was filled with great compassion and I called out: “Oh Lord, what can I do here? I can’t leave this place without You doing something for me to see that this woman will be delivered!” I started praying again with such passion that my husband put his arms around me, because he was worried about the way I totally gave myself in prayer. We still had a lot to do on this trip and he was afraid that I would lose my strength in this tropical heat. But I asked him to let go of me and to allow me to pray until I would see a sign of victory. He allowed me to do this.
I started praying again. While I did this another language came out of my mouth like a ball of fire out of the midst of my stomach. I had never spoken this language in the Spirit. Undoubtedly I had never learned this language and I had never heard of it.
But while this language was coming out of my mouth I saw a change in the facial expression of the woman we were praying for. I saw that her eyes were ‘listening’ and I immediately understood that I was speaking her language.
While this change came over her, I saw that the muscles in her face began to relax. The trembling stopped and her hands were no longer waving in the air as if she was trying to hit me. She had been twisting, almost like a crawling snake. This also stopped, just like the continuing laughter over her shoulder in a hysterical way. Then something remarkable happened.
I could not only see that she understood me, all the sudden I was able to understand myself; I was able to think and speak in a language I had never learned and never heard before!
During the minutes that followed I explained to her the story of Jesus Christ, God’s gift to us and how Jesus died for our sins and was risen from the death. And while I was completely aware of every word that I pronounced, I guided her  to the Lord Jesus Christ with a full understanding of that language at that moment.
She was completely delivered and she is still alive today. She became a testimony of the resurrection power of Jesus Christ.
She was given back to her husband on that same day. She took her baby and took care of him. Now, many years later, she knows the Lord and has raised her children accordingly.
After that particular moment I didn’t know that language anymore. Later on I heard other people speak this same language in the mountains, but I couldn’t understand and could absolutely not speak it.
How great is our God! What a blessing to be filled with his Holy Spirit and to have faith, that He knows what needs to be done when we don’t know what to do. He will guide and direct us.”
