4.5 The ultimate sign
The Lord Jesus has won the victory over satan and his demons on Golgotha. He has given the Holy Spirit to his students after He was glorified by the Father at the right-
When they were baptized in this Spirit, they received this as a sign: the ability to speak in spiritual languages.
The phenomenal that is that before that time, this expression from God had never taken place. There is no sign of a strange, new or spiritual language from and through the Spirit in the Old Covenant.
It is the ultimate sign that belongs to the gift of the New Covenant, to the baptism in the Holy Spirit.
We more or less do find all other expressions in the Old Covenant, with people that were touched with the power of the Holy Spirit. It were just individuals but they knew the works of God’s Spirit.
But in the fullness of time the Lord Jesus gives, as a sign of the outpouring of the Spirit, to his students the ability to speak in spiritual languages.
We see this sign also repeatedly with the baptizing in the Spirit with other groups of people.
Spiritual languages are:
• for the construction of the believer himself;
• for the wellbeing of all;
• for intercession
• as an identification mark.
God’s goodness is without limits! He knows who we are, how we have been created and what has become of us; in human perspective we are often weak. At least with our own human spirit we can not stand in the battle against dark powers.
This is the reason He meets us in love. He wants us to be strong in Him, in this world, that is being ruled by ‘the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.’ (see Ephesians 6:12).
For this reason He gives us the ‘abundant provision of grace and the gift of justice, to ‘reign as kings, for ever’ through Jesus (see Romans 5:17). We shall also rule over sin, that is crouching at our door: which desires to have us (see Genesis 4:7).
